Soccer Faces UIW Friday on the Road

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi soccer team closes out a three-game road stand this Friday at the University of the Incarnate Word at 7 p.m. The Islanders (0-12-0, 0-5-0) are looking to bounce back after a pair of overtime losses last weekend with road match against the Cardinals (3-7-1, 2-3-0) for the first time since the 2014 season. 
 
THE OPENING KICK           
•  The Islanders travel to San Antonio for a match against UIW on Friday at 7 p.m. The Blue and Green is 1-1-1 against the Cardinals through three meetings.
• A&M-Corpus Christi had its streak of three-consecutive games with a goal snapped last Sunday. The streak marked the sixth three-game streak in program history.
• Heading into the weekend, the Blue and Green are just six points out of the sixth spot in the Southland Conference standings, behind Sam Houston State and Southeastern Louisiana. The Islanders qualified for their first ever trip to the conference tournament last year in fifth place.
• The lone match on Friday marks the third of four weekends this season when the Islanders have just one game in a week. The fourth time will be the season finale on Oct. 28 against Houston Baptist at the Dugan Soccer Stadium.
 
KICKING CANCER     
• The Islanders announced today that the regular season final on Oct. 28 against Houston Baptist will be the team's annual Kicking Cancer match for the season to raise breast cancer awareness. 

SERIES HISTORY     
• Through three meetings, the Islanders are level with the Cardinals at 1-1-1.
• A&M-Corpus Christi topped UIW last season 1-0, as a part of a five-out-of-seven streak the led the Blue and Green to the Southland Conference Tournament.
• Both teams went the full distance in 2014 in a 1-1 tie after 110 minutes of action. Yvette Franco scored the lone goal for the Islanders in the match.
 
LAST MATCHES      
• A&M-Corpus Christi dropped a pair of heartbreaking matches last week to Nicholls and Southeastern Louisiana. Both matches were tied after regulation, but the Colonels and Lady Lions struck quickly in the extra period of their respective games to send the Islanders home with a pair of losses.
Shayla Spearman scored a game-tying goal in the second half of Sunday's match against Nicholls to send the Blue and Green into overtime. Nicholls converted on a corner kick in the 92nd minute to win the match 2-1.
• On Sunday, Jordan Wainwright did not miss a beat in her first start in six matches. The Live Oak, Fla., native posted a shutout in regulation with seven stops. In the 93rd minute, SLU was awarded a game-winning penalty kick for a 1-0 victory.
 
SCOUTING INCARNATE WORD
• The Cardinals enter Friday's matchup with a 3-7-1 record with wins over Nicholls, Southeastern Louisiana and Prairie View A&M.
• Through five matches in conference play, UIW is 2-3, including a pair of losses last weekend to Northwestern State, 1-0, and Central Arkansas, 5-0.
• UIW is ineligible for the Southland Conference tournament this year, due to the transition from Division II to Division I.
• The Cardinals have been led in scoring by a trio of players with two goals apiece. Sam Batley and Brooke Hanson have six points with a pair of goals and assists.
 • The goalkeeping situation appears to be up in the air, as both Sydney Huntsinger and Haley Nelson have made appearances in conference play, allowing a combined eight goals in five matches with a .742 save percentage.
