HARLINGEN, Texas – Fighting for a spot in the main draw of the ITF Harlingen Pro Futures, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi freshman
Gonzalo Achondo came up just short in the final round of qualifying.
Achondo fell just one match shy of advancing into the main draw at the prestigious Pro Futures event. The newcomer dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision to Julian Cash from Oklahoma State.
Cash plays number one for the Big 12 Cowboys and is currently ranked 29th in the NCAA Division I singles rankings. He is also ranked first in the nation in doubles play at the NCAA level.
In a slew of tight back-and-forth games, the former All-American Cash edged Achondo in a handful of deuce games to take the match.
"Gonzalo battled very hard today against an extremely high-caliber opponent," said Director of Tennis
Steve Moore. "The match was much closer than the score, but he just wasn't quite able to dig out a lot of the tough deuce games. We're very proud of him for making the final qualifying round of a pro tournament. He is working very hard and the future is very bright."
Achondo and the rest of the Islanders return to the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center to take on the Islander alumni Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in the Robinson Family Islander Alumni Match. Admission to the alumni match is free and Islanders Tennis will provide snacks and drinks for all in attendance.
