Tierney Flaherty was hired as Assistant Coach with the Islanders volleyball program in Feb. 2022. She arrived after spending three years at Assistant Coach at Tennessee Tech
Flaherty spent the 2019-21 seasons at Tennessee Tech where the program tallied a winning record in the OVC each year. The 11 OVC wins in 2021 were the most for Tech since 2008.
She was responsible for team defense and trained the liberos and blockers, and coached Taylor Dorsey in becoming a three-time All-Conference selection as a middle blocker, including twice on the First-Team. She mentored several All-Conference honorees including Ali Verzani, Ashley Hand, and Maddie Isringhausen.
Under Flaherty, Tennessee Tech finished 46th in the nation in total team blocks, 61st in blocks per set and led the OVC in both categories.
In addition to her duties as the defensive coordinator, she oversaw several other areas including team operations, recruiting, scheduling, Volleymetrics film break down and upload, camp director, home tournament director and social media coordinator.
Flaherty joined the Golden Eagles after serving as an assistant coach at Wofford College for the 2018 season. Among other responsibilities, she handled student-athlete academic support and team camp organization and assisted with film breakdown, opponent scouting, travel, and meal planning.
On the court, the Georgetown, Indiana native assisted in training all position groups, with special emphasis on middle blockers and outside hitters.
Prior to her time at Wofford, Flaherty was a student assistant coach at App State for the 2017 season. In her position, she compiled scouting reports from Volleymetrics and team film, assisted the head coach with practice drills and game planning, charted opposing teams' offenses, helped with the invitations and coaching aspects of the annual team camp, and performed administrative duties.
While coaching the Mountaineers, she worked on the bench for Club Synergy, an 18-and-under travel team, and Watauga High School in Boone, N.C. Flaherty coached three seasons at Watauga, where she helped oversee a three-year record of 64-12. In the role, she scheduled tournaments for competition, represented Club Synergy at regional and national tournaments, and worked closely with players, parents, and college coaches to generate recruiting opportunities. She also taught private volleyball lessons for all skill sets and ages.
She also helped as an assistant coach for two seasons at Watauga High School in Boone, N.C. There, she assisted both varsity and junior varsity coaches during practice and games and helped refine the volleyball skills of the players. Flaherty contributed to the class of 2018's three-year record of 64-12 and the team's two appearances in the Final Eight.
As a Division I student-athlete, Flaherty began her career in 2014 at Wofford before transferring to play at App State in 2016. A knee injury brought on her transition from player to coach for the 2017 campaign when she served as a student assistant.
She earned her bachelor's degree in psychology from App State, graduating Summa Cum Laude in December 2017. Flaherty added a Master of Arts in exercise science in December 2021, graduating Summa Cum Laude.
