CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi soccer team plays its first two Southland Conference matches at home during the upcoming week, first hosting UTRGV on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the first South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union, of the new school year before then welcoming McNeese to town on Sunday at noon.
The Islanders (3-4-2, 0-1-0 SLC) most recently began conference play with a tough defeat at Stephen F. Austin last Thursday, finding an early lead but surrendering late to fall despite outpacing the Lumberjacks in many offensive statistics. They will be returning to the friendly confines of the Dr. Jack Dugan Family Soccer & Track Stadium, where they have posted a nice 3-1-2 record so far this year and where they earned seven of their 12 conference points in 2025.
A&M-Corpus Christi first begins the week against the Vaqueros (4-5-0, 0-1-0 SLC) to kick off the South Texas Showdown, the annual rivalry series between the two schools. The Islanders will be trying to take back the trophy after falling in the overall standings last year, which happened despite a positive result from the soccer program, who went on the road to Edinburg and took down UTRGV by a final score of 3-2. This was their third straight time earning points in the matchup, as they also emerged victorious in 2024 while playing to a 1-1 draw in 2023.
The Islanders then continue on at home against the Cowgirls (5-5-0, 0-1-0 SLC), who started off their own conference slate with a road loss at the hands of Southeastern. The two squads played a very spirited match in their last meeting in 2025, with both scoring in the first half before taking things the rest of the way to a 1-1 draw. The most recent match in Corpus Christi ended up going the way of the Islanders, who earned a 3-1 victory back on September 27, 2024.
