LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball team continues its nonconference schedule with another tournament over the weekend, heading to Sin City to take part in the Lucky Aces Invitational.
The Islanders (2-5) first start their time in Las Vegas with a matchup against Hawaii, which gets underway on Friday at 8:30 p.m. CT. They then get back in action on Saturday at 4 p.m. CT against UCLA, and they close things out on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. CT against Iowa State.
A&M-Corpus Christi is coming off its best weekend of the young season, when it won two of its three matches at the Tarleton State Invitational by taking down Denver and the host Texans. The first match against the Pioneers ended up being a five-set thriller, with the team climbing out of a 2-1 hole in set count to secure its first victory of the season. The Islanders then bounced back after a defeat to Sam Houston by sweeping Tarleton, securing a 2-1 record at the event to tie for the best mark among the field. Ava Hight and
Kaitlyn Aleshire were named to the All-Tournament Team.
In addition to the honor at the tournament, Hight was also named the Southland Conference Setter of the Week on Monday, earning the award after finishing with 106 total assists across the three matches. She made some program history in the contest against Denver as well, recording 43 assists, 10 kills and 10 digs to become just the fourth Islander to ever record a triple double.
As for this week, the Islanders will be taking on a trio of unfamiliar opponents when they descend upon the desert, having never met the Rainbow Wāhine (6-2) or the Cyclones (5-2) before and facing off with the Bruins (6-2) just once all the way back in 2003. UCLA and Iowa State will be their second and third matches of the season against power conference opponents after previously falling to Kansas State in the season opener, and the match against Hawaii will be their second against a member of the Mountain West after previously hosting UTEP at the Dugan Wellness Center as part of the Southwest Showdown, presented by Texas Army National Guard.
