FRISCO, Texas – Sophomore
Ava Hight of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball team was honored on Monday afternoon after an incredible weekend of matches, as it was announced by the league office that she was named the Southland Conference Setter of the Week for the period of September 7-13.
Hight, from Liberty Hill, Texas, was instrumental in setting up the Islanders' attack at the Tarleton State Invitational, getting named to the All-Tournament after helping the team to a 2-1 record with wins over Denver and the host Texans. Across the three matches in Stephenville, she tallied 106 total assists for an average of 35.33 per match and 9.63 per set, doing so while also contributing in other ways with 18 digs and 16 kills.
Hight started off her weekend with a banner day against the Pioneers last Thursday, recording a rare triple-double with a career-high 43 assists, 10 kills and 10 digs in what ended up being a five-set victory for A&M-Corpus Christi. She then collected 28 assists against Sam Houston on Friday before closing things out with 35 more in a sweep of Tarleton the next day, doing so while also pitching in five kills and five digs. By the time the tournament ended, Hight had led all players in assists in every match that she played in.
"Ava has worked diligently to improve her game," Islanders head coach
Steve Greene said. "This weekly honor shines light on her efforts and how much she is helping our team. She led our team through some ups and downs last week and showed how she can run an offense and get everyone involved in and out of system."
Hight's accolade marked the first of her career and the first of the 2026 season for the Islanders in any of the three categories that are voted on. It also helped bring the Setter of the Week award back to the Island after a dominant 2025 campaign, with the currently injured
Virginia Van Der Werff winning the hardware five different times last year en route to a First Team All-Conference nod.
Hight and the rest of the Islanders get back in action in another tournament this upcoming week, traveling to Las Vegas to square off against Hawaii, UCLA and Iowa State in the Lucky Aces Invitational on Friday through Sunday.
