FRISCO, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi track and field team took home its second consecutive weekly conference honor on Wednesday afternoon, as it was announced by the league office that freshman
Colin Benton was named the Southland Conference Men's Track Athlete of the Week for the voting period of April 8-14.
Benton's award makes it back-to-back for the Islanders, coming after sophomore
Elizabeth Khatevi won on the women's side a week ago. When including indoor season, he becomes the second member of the team to win Men's Track Athlete of the week this year alongside sophomore
Kye Lowth on February 18, and for outdoor specifically, he is the first to win the award since Leonardo Ledgister did so all the way back on April 21, 2021.
Benton earned the honor off the strength of the best weekend of competition of his young career at the Cactus Cup in Kingsville, where he set two different personal records on the same day. The first of these came as a member of the Islanders' 4x100 meter relay team, which finished with a time of 41.51 seconds that now ranks fourth all-time in school history in the event. The Houston native then did it himself later in the day, crossing the line in the 100m in 10.66 seconds to finish eighth overall out of 34 and rise all the way up to sixth in program history.
The Islanders will now get back in action again this week, heading out west to California to take part in both the Bryan Clay Invitational, hosted by Azusa Pacific, and the Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut.
