MIAMI, Fla. – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball program will finally see action under first-year head coach Mark Montgomery when they head to sunny Miami this weekend to compete in FIU's tournament Thursday through Saturday.
The Islanders will face the hosts FIU twice, both to be aired live on ESPN+. A&M-Corpus Christi will also see matchups with Lehigh, Stony Brook, and Louisville for a five-game, three-day opening weekend. The tournament schedule can be viewed below.
It will kick off the debut season for Montgomery, who brings 23 years of collegiate head coaching experience to the Island, including 20 spent at Division I.
Suiting up will be a roster of 24 with 13 returners and nine newcomers made up of four transfers and five freshmen. Offensively, they are returning six of the their top-10 batters from last season including
Mimi Thornton who enters her fourth year on the Island. She finished last year with a .245 batting average and was top-three on the team in hits (27) and RBIs (17).
The pitching staff brings back their ace in
Kendra Winfrey who led in ERA and wins. She additionally threw five complete games and was responsible for one of the team's two shutouts last season.
It will be the first meetings with FIU, Lehigh, and Stony Brook for the Islanders but fifth time matching up with Louisville. It will be the first meeting since 2016 as the Cardinals lead the series 4-0.
