SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team will compete in Texas Tech's Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic Friday through Sunday but not before making a pit stop for a one-off matchup with Texas State Thursday night.
The Islanders (3-12) will look to get some momentum going this weekend after facing some difficult opponents already this season.
Offensively, the Islanders have seen
Skylar Heger and Mimi Thorton lead production. They have nearly matched each other at the top of the team leaderboard in batting, hits, and runs driven in. Heger has additionally remained errorless in the field playing at first base with a team-high 51 putouts.
Kendra Winfrey leads the pitching staff with a pair of wins in the circle, throwing for 34.1 innings this season with a complete game already under her belt. She has struck out 24 batters this year.
A&M-Corpus Christi and Detroit Mercy have only faced off twice before, in 2009 and 2018, and have split those decisions. The Islanders trail Texas State 35-14 all-time and Abilene Christian 18-7. They are narrowly edged by Texas Tech 9-7 in the all-time series, last defeating the Red Raiders in 2017.
