LAFAYETTE, La. – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team is back in action this weekend, still traveling out of state to Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun Invitational Friday through Sunday.
The Islanders (1-4) will open with Power Four Ole Miss before taking on both Prairie View A&M and hosts Louisiana twice each for five total games over the span of three days. All games can be followed along with live scoring, and the tournament schedule can be viewed below.
Last weekend kicked off head coach Mark Montgomery's debut season with the Islanders grabbing their first win in the new era with a walk-off 5-4 victory over Stony Brook.
Skylar Heger had the honor of walking it off but was advantageously in the position after the Islanders had already closed the gap to just one run in the final inning and loading the bases with only one out. She entered as a pinch hitter and gave the decisive two-run single up the middle for the 5-4 walk-off.
Heger posted a .385 opening weekend at the plate with five hits and four RBIs. She only trailed
Mimi Thornton who swung for an impressive .429 batting average through five games with a team-leading six hits and also four RBIs. Thornton additionally sent one over for the first home run of the season in the opening game against FIU.
Kendra Winfrey earned the win in the circle against Stony Brook after throwing her first complete game of the year. She struck out 10 batters on the weekend.
The Islanders lead Ole Miss 2-1 in the all-time series, winning the last meeting in 2012 7-4. A&M-Corpus Christi also holds a series advantage against Prairie View at 31-11, most recently facing the Panthers in 2023 in Corpus Christi. The Islanders trail Louisiana 2-16 in the head-to-head, going for their first win since 2004.
