EDINBURG, Texas - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball team is back in action this weekend as they face UTRGV for the second time in three days in Southland Conference play. The Islanders swept the first leg of the South Texas Showdown on Thursday night 3-0.
The Islanders picked up their best win of the season last night as they knocked off the first-place Vaqueros. They were led by
Tatum Mason, who had a career-high 12 kills as they hit .318 as a team over three sets. Corpus Christi took the opening set in dominating fashion, 25-14, before grinding out the second and third sets, 25-23 and 25-22.
The victory helped the Islanders' positioning in the conference as they face the final five games of their regular season. They sit alone in fifth place, behind the four-way tie for first at 9-2 after UTRGV and Southeastern both fell last night. One game behind the Islanders, Northwestern State, McNeese, and Lamar sit at 5-6.
Virginia Van Der Werff finished with five kills and 30 assists on the night, while
Lauren Sandvold had a team-high 12 digs. As a team, they were able to hold UTRGVÂ to their worst-hitting match in SLC play at .124.
