Islanders Volleyball Take Care of Business At LSU New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball team faced off against LSU New Orleans tonight in Southland Conference play. The Islanders took care of business and earned a 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-22) victory to take their record to 7-13 and 5-4 in SLC play.

The Islanders entered on a three-match skid, but they put an end to that in emphatic fashion as they cruised to a three-set win tonight. They had a balanced attack on the night, as six different Islanders finished with five kills or more in the match. Kenna Buchanan led the way as she finished with a match-high 13 kills, while Virginia Van Der Werff had a team-high 37 assists and 14 digs.

Ally Saleh and Kaitlyn Aleshire led the Islanders with five kills each in the first set. As a team, they hit .375 and had 18 kills in the set. There were three lead changes and five ties, but the Islanders pulled away by winning six straight points in the middle of the set and never looked back.

Facing a side that has struggled in conference play, the Islanders kept their level of play high throughout the night. They had their best hitting set of the night in round two as they hit .432 as a team. Buchanan came to life with seven kills, and Hadley Burger added four. Corpus Christi held the home side to hitting below .250 on the night and captured set two, 25-20.

Up two sets to none, the Islanders avoided a letdown in the third, taking it 25-22. Six different Islanders recorded a kill in the set as the Islanders won four-straight points after being tied at 20.

The Islanders handled their business against the team at the bottom of the conference tonight, but they will be in for a tougher test next time out when they face Southeastern on Saturday afternoon. The Lions entered tonight on a seven-match winning streak as they faced UTRGV.
