Islanders Fall in SLC Play at Northwestern State

NATCHITOCHES, La. - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball team finished up its week with a road match at Northwestern State this afternoon. Coming off a road win on Thursday, the Islanders finished off their road stand by falling to the Demons 3-1 to drop their record to 6-11 overall and 4-2 in Southland play.

The Islanders got off to a hot start and completely dominated the opening set, taking it 25-12. They were ticking on all cylinders as they hit .429 in the first set and added five service aces. Kenna Buchanan led the way as she had five kills on eight attacks while Virginia Van Der Werff had three kills of her own and two assists. Sydney Yohe did the majority of the damage from the service line as she had four of the five aces.

After the first set, the momentum seemed to flip seemingly out of nowhere. The Islanders looked to be in good position late in the second set as they led 20-17, but the Demons scored eight of the next nine points. The hitting percentage fell off late in the set and ended at .139 for the Islanders. Hadley Burger had three kills in the set while Van Der Werff had three more as well.

Both teams played well in the third set as they each hit over .333 as teams. Buchanan and Burger did the majority of the work for the Islanders as they combined for nine kills. TAMUCC jumped ahead early as they led 9-4, but a five-point Demons streak tied the match at 12. The two sides stayed close and the match was tied at 21, but it was Northwestern State that executed late and took the set 25-22.

The final set was all Demons as the Islanders struggled to stop the home side. They hit over .420 in the closing set on their way to a 25-13 set win to secure the match.

Buchanan and Burger each finished in double figures in kills with 15 and 10, respectively. Van Der Werff finished with 17 assists and Brooklyn Jaeger had a team-high 15 digs.

The Islanders return home in SLC play next week and host Lamar and SFA. It will be a pink out when they face the Cardinals on Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. in the Dugan Wellness Center.
