HOUSTON, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's and women's tennis programs mimicked their season openers, each posting another 7-0 result in their second matches of the year over Alcorn State Tuesday.
Similar to yesterday, both the men and women defeated Alcorn State in clean 7-0 sweeps today after weather in the area split the previously scheduled doubleheaders between two days. They now each move to a 2-0 start to their seasons.
"This team has worked so hard all fall and over the Christmas break!" said head coach
Steve Moore. "They've improved so much and they are so hungry and motivated! It was great to see them compete in the first matches of the season. I thought they did a great job with their energy and fight! We always measure the team on controlling the things we can control – playing each present point separately with intensity and having consistent high energy, not in spurts but through the entire match. I thought they really strived to do both of these."
The same six players for the women got back into the lineup today, as all six move to 2-0 on the year in both doubles and singles play.
Yana Mykytyn/
Kseniya Ramanouskaya stayed strong at No. 1 doubles with a smooth 6-0 win. The pairings of
Emma Bousquet/
Viktoriia Sedova and
Juliette Jalai/
Adriana Jimenez Casado switched doubles courts but still notched wins today with 6-2 results.
In singles, no Islander saw the same court as yesterday but each still came away with a victory. Ramanouskaya and Mykytyn switched positions between the top two courts, with the former taking the top spot for a 6-0, 6-2 win while Mykytyn grinded a 6-2, 7-6 (6) decision at No. 2.
Bousquet buckled down and pulled out a 6-0, 3-6, 10-2 three-setter at court three. Jimenez, Sedova, and Jalai all took care of business in straight sets at courts four, five, and six.
The men found a way to improve even from yesterday, refusing to relent even a set on the day. The duo of
Ethan Dasset/
Josef Zapletal improve to 2-0 in doubles play on the year after a 6-3 win at court two. Today,
Etienne Marty paired with
Mikel Garmendia at No. 1 and didn't drop a game for a quick 6-0 decision while the new pairing of
Filip Vacula/
Maxime Salesses notched a 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles.
Marty, Vacula, Garmedia, and Zapletal also moved to 2-0 in singles play on the year after taking care of their individual courts today all in straight sets at spots No. 1 through No. 4. Dasset and Salesses got into the lineup at courts five and six, posting 6-2, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-2 results for the clean sweep.
The men improve to 7-0 all-time over Alcorn State while the women slide to 6-0 all-time.
Both teams will be back in action tomorrow at Texas Lutheran at 2 p.m. They will then head to Mason, Texas to play McMurray Thursday in a doubleheader at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. before heading back to Corpus Christi.
