HOUSTON, Texas – Both the men's and women's Texas A&M-Corpus Christi tennis programs got the 2026 season started Monday against Alcorn State, posting the same result of 7-0 sweep to begin the new year on a high note.
It gets both teams to a 1-0 start to the 2026 season before turning around and playing again tomorrow. The men were originally slated to take on Alcorn State in a doubleheader today while the women were holding off until tomorrow, but weather around the neutral court site caused both teams to get going today in one match apiece. The teams will play their second scheduled games against the Braves tomorrow.
The men saw three players go undefeated in both doubles and singles play. The duo of
Etienne Marty/
Omar Suarez paired at court one for the win to help secure the first doubles point of the season combined with
Ethan Dasset/
Josef Zapletal's win at court three. Suarez, Marty, and Zapletal each followed it up with singles wins at courts one, three, and five.
Newcomers
Filip Vacula and
Mikel Garmendia notched their first victories for the Islanders with the former getting it done at court six in straight sets 7-5, 6-0. Garmendia pulled out a gritty three-setter at court four, coming back to edge his opponent 3-6, 7-5, 10-8.
The women had six players go today, and all six took care of business in both doubles and singles play for 2-0 days across the board. All three doubles courts played out, as
Yana Mykytyn/
Kseniya Ramanouskaya won at No. 1,
Juliette Jalai/
Adriana Jimenez Casado won at No. 2, and freshmen
Emma Bousquet/
Viktoriia Sedova opened their college careers with a win at No. 3.
None of the women dropped a set today in singles play for the polished 7-0 win. Jimenez and Bousquet posted mirrored results at courts three (6-2, 6-0) and four (6-0, 6-2) while Sedova only relinquished one game at court six in a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
Mykytyn and Ramanouskaya defended courts one and two while Jalai defeated her opponent 6-2, 6-1 at court five.
The men improve to 6-0 all-time over Alcorn State while the women slide to 5-0 all-time.
