EDINBURG, Texas – After returning home for a pair of games during the week, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball heads right back on the road over the weekend, making the trek south to take on UTRGV on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the first South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union of the season.
The Islanders (2-9, 1-3 SLC) will be looking to follow up on their most recent game against New Orleans on New Year's Eve, where they rode a program-record 10 first half three-pointers to a dominant 85-54 victory over the Privateers. This game saw many different standout individual performances, chief among them being a 24-point outburst from senior
Samora Watson that stands as the highest for an Islander in any game this season and a 21-point showing from junior
Asha Walker on a red-hot 6-10 clip from downtown. In addition, both redshirt sophomore
Torie Sevier and sophomore
Rayna Williams managed to record double-doubles in this game, making it the first time that two Islanders did so in the same contest since Alexes Bryant and Emma Young all the way back on November 14, 2019 against South Alabama.
Saturday's game will include some extra stakes, as the winner will earn three points toward the South Texas Showdown standings that currently sit tied at seven apiece. A&M-Corpus Christi emerged victorious over the Vaqueros (5-8, 2-2 SLC) in last year's standings by a score of 34-26, making it two wins in a row and seven in total in nine series dating back to the 2016-17 school year. Even with this, though, the Islanders will be looking to enact some revenge over UTRGV, as they were taken down in both meetings during the 2024-25 season.
Saturday's game can be watched live on ESPN+. It will also be available to listen live for free on 1440 AM K-E-Y-S with Doug Kesterson on the call
