Soccer Sets Sights on Road Conference Match With Southeastern

HAMMOND, La. – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi soccer team gets back on the road to continue its run through conference play this weekend, heading to Louisiana for the first time this season to take on Southeastern on Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Islanders (2-5-3, 0-1-1 SLC) enter play looking to bounce back from a loss in their most recent match, when they were taken down by Nicholls at the Dr. Jack Dugan Family Soccer and Track Stadium on Thursday. They played better than the 2-1 final score would indicate, attempting more shots, shots on goal and corner kicks than the Colonels while also winning the possession battle, but a late go-ahead goal by the visitors kept them from walking away with any points despite their strong effort.

"The situation we find ourselves in is that we have played two good games in conference play, and the team knows they are close to a positive breakthrough, so they need to continue to keep their heads up and focus on the tasks they are faced with," Islanders head coach Daniel Clitnovici said. "Thursday night's game was unfortunate in the fact that we outplayed our opponent in almost all areas of the game, but the final results didn't land in our favor. That's soccer, though, and we have to stay the course and continue to focus on ourselves."

On Sunday, the Islanders will look to both pick up their first conference win of the year while also handing the Lady Lions (2-4-3, 1-0-1 SLC) their first loss in SLC play, with their opponents having defeated UTRGV on the road and tied Stephen F. Austin at home to open things up. A&M-Corpus Christi trails Southeastern 5-8-2 in the all-time series but has had more success as of late, holding a record of 4-3-1 in the last eight meetings dating back to 2019. This includes a 1-0 victory in Hammond last season, which was the third of what would become a program-best five game winning streak.

"The team has regrouped well from Thursday night, and they are refocused and looking forward to the challenge on Sunday," Clitnovici said. "SLU is a tough place to play, and they are a well-coached team. We anticipate a strong opponent, but we also feel we can get something out of the game if we play to the level we are striving for."
