FRISCO, Texas – After a 3-1 home weekend, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball team saw sophomore
Virginia Van Der Werff named SLC Setter of the Week while redshirt sophomore
Brooklyn Jaeger was tabbed SLC Defensive Player of the Week, announced by the Southland Conference Monday.
It marks Van Der Werff's second weekly accolade of the season, the first athlete in the league to be win a Player of the Week twice. It is the first award for Jaeger this year, but third in her career after earning Defensive Player of the Week twice last season.
Van Der Werff averaged 11.00 assists/set over the weekend, running the Islanders to a combined .310 hitting percentage after dishing out 176 assists. In addition to her offensive game, Van Der Werff also did damage at the service line where she recorded 14 aces through four matches including a career-high six against Prairie View. Additionally, she tallied 15 kills and 29 digs.
"Virginia is really fun to coach, and she did an outstanding job of running our offense this week," said head coach
Steve Greene. "She was able to get four different attackers to have hitting efficiencies above .300 which shows her hard work getting position and consistency on location. She also did a great job from the service line and playing defense this week as well."
Jaeger was a backrow staple for the Islanders, picking up 71 digs for a 4.44/set mark. Through the four matches, she had at least 10 digs in each and 20+ digs in two of them including a season-high 23 against Sam Houston. Jaeger has now recorded 20+ digs in three matches this year and is top-five in the league in digs/set at 4.06.
"Brooklyn is really establishing herself as a leader for our team. She really took over serve receive this week and put us in a position to be in system consistently. Her effort and tenacity are second to none and it showed in key moments with outstanding defensive plays throughout our last four matches," said Greene.
The Islanders will get back in action on the road this week, heading up to Houston to compete in the Rice Invitational Friday through Sunday before returning home on Sept. 24 to open conference play against SFA.
