Men’s Tennis Tops Trinity Twice, Both Teams Back Home Tomorrow for Doubleheaders

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis team took a trip to San Antonio to take on Trinity in a doubleheader Wednesday and came away with 7-0 and 5-2 match victories ahead of both Islanders tennis teams returning home Thursday.

The Islanders (10-4) finally got back into the win column with two victories over Trinity (8-5), sweeping them 7-0 in the first match before closing out a 5-2 match two win. They won the doubles point in both matches.

"We had to really battle today in this match against Trinity, which was very good for us! They are one of the best teams in Division III and they play with a lot of fight and pride! We got tested and pushed and we had to make a full commitment to our fight and processes! This is exactly what we needed before conference starts. I'm very proud of these guys for the way they rose up, showed heart and grit, and stayed with their process in the pressure moments! Most importantly, I'm proud of the character they showed," said head coach Steve Moore.

Tom Berry went completely untouched today, going both 2-0 in doubles and singles play. He partnered with Omar Suarez in match one and grinded out a 7-6 (7-2) tiebreak win at No. 1 doubles before continuing at the top court in match two with Harry Fouzas for a 6-4 doubles win.

He played on courts three and four for singles today, defeating his first opponent with a pair of 6-3 sets before battling out a three-set victory in the second match of the day. Suarez also went 2-0 in singles play, swapping with Berry at courts four and three between matches to win his matchups 6-4, 6-4 and 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.

Nicolas Trebuchet and Josef Zapletal stayed consistent at No. 5 and No. 6 singles today, keeping those courts undefeated today. Trebuchet never conceded more than two games in a set today, while Zapletal took an easy 6-1, 6-1 first match before gritting out a 6-3, 7-5 match two win for the sweeping day.

The Islanders men and women will be in action tomorrow back at home at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center when they host Texas Wesleyan in a pair of doubleheaders at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The women enter with a 12-2 season record, going 51-13 overall in dual singles matches. Juliette Jalai and Josefa Fuenzalida lead the team both with double figure wins of their own, with the former on top with the 12-1 singles record. Fuenzalida is 10-1 on the year.

Both teams are undefeated all-time against the Rams, the women winning the sole matchup last year 4-0 and the men winning both last year 7-0 and 4-0.
