Islanders Drop to NWST 4-3, First Loss to Conference Opponent Since 2022

NATCHITOCHES, La. – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis team saw a 28-match winning streak against conference opponents come to an end Monday, falling in a narrow 4-3 decision to Northwestern State.

The Islanders (12-2, 2-1 SLC) take just their second loss on the year and first in conference play. It is the first time the team has fallen to a league opponent since the 2022 season, which coincidently also came against the Lady Demons. That was their only loss in league play that year.

"First, I give a strong salute to all the heart, fight, grit, and sacrifice that went into that 28-match win streak from the Islanders! Secondly, I give big respect to Northwestern State today, they simply fought us! That is one the first class programs that I have the highest respect for, their leadership is amazing. Thirdly, I believe deeply in our team! I believe in our character, heart, talent, and motivation! We will bounce back, and we will bounce back stronger than ever! We will work harder than anyone can imagine, and we will not accept excuses. I am excited about the future of this team and the future of our season because of the high character players on this team," said head coach Steve Moore

They started the day out dominant in doubles play, with courts one and two taking carer of the point. Kseniya Ramanouskaya/Yana Mykytyn improved to 3-0 in conference doubles with the 6-2 win while Josefa Fuenzalida/Leticia Tarocco registered their first with a 6-1 decision.

The Lady Demons found their stride in singles play, however, as Ramanouskaya and Fuenzalida were the only Islanders to secure their singles courts. Ramanouskaya won hers on court four in a battled 6-1, 6-7 (7-9). 10-7 third-set tiebreak while Fuenzalida also went the distance in a three-set victory at court five.

The Islanders will now head back home for a break in conference play to host Texas Wesleyan and Howard Payne in doubleheaders on March 13 and March 18, respectively.
