ARLINGTON, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis team played tenaciously at UT-Arlington but fell in a 4-0 decision Wednesday at the UTA Tennis Complex.
The final score was not indicative of the fight the Islanders (8-3) showed, battling a closely contested doubles point and having multiple opportunities in singles play. However, UT-Arlington (5-5) was able to come out on top of all the tight contests for the final match score.
"This match was much closer than the score showed, and our guys battled hard today!" said head coach
Steve Moore. "We had big momentum and setpoint to win doubles! We fought back hard after that and had an opportunity to win matches, but it just did not go our way today. I give a lot of credit to UT-Arlington, they were very tough at home! We are improving every match and the sky is the limit for this team. We have excellent character, leadership, and motivation, so we will keep chopping wood and getting better every day!"
After
Omar Suarez and
Etienne Marty took a 6-4 victory at No. 2 doubles, the doubles point would be determined on court three where Mathieu Coignet/
Josef Zapletal had a chance to clinch. It came down to a tiebreak after they fought a 6-6 set and unfortunately it was the home team that came out with the edge.
Singles play was equally close, despite the final score. Suarez had nearly completed a win at court five, leading it 6-2, 5-4 before the match was clinched. Marty was also grinding at court six, evening his match with a 6-4 second set win.
Nicholas Niox Chateau dropped a tough first-set tiebreak at No. 3 and was playing tough in the second until play was stopped.
Next up, the Islanders will remain the road team for their next three matches, going to Rice on March 6 before playing a doubleheader at Trinity on March 12.
