Soccer Starts Back Half of Conference Schedule With Trip to Northwestern State

NATCHITOCHES, La. – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's soccer team heads back on the road this week as it moves into the latter half of Southland Conference play, traveling to square off with Northwestern State on Thursday at 7 p.m.

The Islanders (3-6-4, 1-2-2 SLC) leave town trying to carry over the momentum from a successful pair of matches last week, where they earned a crucial four points in the conference standings. They started out with a big win on Thursday over Lamar, treating the over 900 fans in attendance that night to an offensive show on their way to a 3-2 victory, and they followed that up by fighting hard and earning a 1-1 draw with East Texas A&M three days later. Freshman MyJoi Anderson led the way for the team, dishing out two assists in the former contest and scoring her second goal of the season in the latter, and junior Ashley Wilson helped set things up with an assist in both matches.

"All the pieces fit together in that game," Islanders associate head coach Chloe Roberts said of the team's performance in the win over Lamar. "It showed that if the team really puts their minds to it and they really want to go out there and have the heart, the grit, the determination and the resilience to be successful, they can do anything they want to do on a given day. That was the most rewarding thing of the whole performance over the weekend, the pieces fitting together and the team really buying in to what we're doing and actually seeing the success that makes it all worthwhile."

A&M-Corpus Christi now sets its sights on the Demons (7-3-3, 2-1-1 SLC), who come into play sitting in third place in the conference after taking down Southeastern 2-1 in their most recent match last Thursday. The team has matched up with its counterparts from Louisiana 14 times in total, holding a record of 3-9-2 overall since first squaring off in 2013. The Islanders were taken down in the last meeting between the two on October 18 of last year in Corpus Christi, getting a penalty kick goal from senior Morgan Westbury but still falling by a final of 3-1. As for this season, Northwestern State currently ranks tied for first in the conference in goals scored and has the conference's second-leading points scorer in Emily Senatore, emphasizing the need for a strong defensive performance from the Islanders on Thursday.

"Road games are hard for any program, but we just want to go out there and focus on ourselves," Roberts said. "We have to put a gameplan together, and we feel we have one for Northwestern State, but we also need to focus on what's working for us. I think that's what the team is really doing a good job in, understanding that each opponent is different but also understanding what we have to do as a program and as a whole collective unit to be successful. We're going to be who we are, we're going to go out there and do our absolute best to get a result on the road, which I think is very possible with this group, and we'll see what happens."
