Soccer Tries to Roll Momentum Into SLC Tournament Rematch With East Texas A&M

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi soccer team remains at home for their next conference match over the weekend, playing host to East Texas A&M on Sunday at noon in a rematch of last year's Southland Conference Championship semifinals.

The Islanders (3-6-3, 1-2-1 SLC) come into play riding high off a big win over Lamar on Thursday, netting their first conference victory of the year in what ended up being a thrilling contest. After conceding less than a minute into the evening, the team scored three unanswered goals in the first half, equalizing on a long-range strike by junior Vanessa Wimbish in the fifth minute before taking the lead with two goals in quick succession by redshirt senior Madison Page and junior Dakota Merino. This proved to be all they needed to hang on, surviving a late Cardinals rally that included a red card and penalty kick miss in the 87th minute to secure an important three points.

"We hope to keep our positive momentum going from Thursday," Islanders head coach Daniel Clitnovici said. "We played well against Lamar, and we need to make sure we show up with the same ambition on Sunday."

A&M-Corpus Christi will now try to keep things rolling while also looking to avenge its most recent loss to the Lions (4-5-3, 1-0-3 SLC) last November, when the team was taken down in the conference tournament to end its most successful season in program history. This match was a back-and-forth one throughout, with the two teams trading goals out of halftime before the Lions would go ahead in the 68th minute, moving the score to the 2-1 mark in which it would finish at. The visitors come into play on Sunday having earned points in each of their first four conference matches, tying their first three before taking down Nicholls 2-0 in their most recent game on Thursday.

"We are excited to host East Texas A&M, as they are a top team in our conference and our games always make one another better." Clitnovici said. "We know they will have an explosive offense, and we need to make sure we are ready for that as best we can be."
