EDINBURG, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball team will face a familiar foe in consecutive matches this week, squaring off with UTRGV in Edinburg Thursday before returning home with the Vaqueros in tow for a Saturday rematch Saturday.
Both matches will go towards the South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union, an annual rivalry series between the two institutions. There are five points up for grabs, with each match counting as two points in addition to an extra attendance point awarded to the school that draws the biggest crowd.
The Islanders are already up 3.0-0.0 in this year's competition after soccer defeated UTRGV on the road 3-2. A&M-Corpus Christi has won seven of the nine years the rivalry has been alive.
For volleyball, they will also be looking for a winning conference record for the first time this season. With just six remaining matches, the Islanders are still fighting for seeding in the conference tournament which will be held on Nov. 21-23.
Both matches will be streamed live on ESPN+. Saturday's match will feature free rally towels, presented by Rally Credit Union, provided to the first 200 fans in attendance.
