Soccer Concludes Regular Season vs. UIW With Playoff Berth in Sight

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi soccer team concludes the 2025 regular season this week, hosting UIW on Thursday at 7 p.m. looking to secure its spot in the upcoming Southland Conference Soccer Championships

The Islanders (4-8-5, 2-4-3 SLC) currently sit in a tie with the Cardinals (4-7-4, 2-4-3 SLC) for the eighth and final seed in the conference tournament and two points ahead of both Nicholls and UTRGV, meaning that with a win on Thursday, they would lock up a playoff berth regardless of any other results from across the league. If Thursday's match ends in a draw, the Islanders would then need both a Vaqueros win and a Colonels loss to force a three-way tie for the final spot with UIW and UTRGV, as they would hold the tiebreaker in this scenario thanks to what would be a 1-0-1 record against those teams.

One thing that the Islanders do have going for them is their recent form of late, as in their most recent match against McNeese last Thursday, they earned a crucial point on the road in the form of a 1-1 tie. Junior Ashley Wilson put A&M-Corpus Christi ahead on that night on a beautiful Olimpico goal off a corner kick in the 13th minute, and after surrendering the equalizer right before halftime, it ramped up its defensive intensity and held serve until the final whistle. This helped bring the team's point total in October up to eight, matching its amount from August for the most in a month this season.

"The team has put together a tremendous last few weeks," Islanders head coach Daniel Clitnovici said. "We have got ourselves in a position where destiny lies in our hands, and we are excited about that opportunity."

As for their opponents, the Islanders welcome a Cardinals team that played to a 1-1 draw with Stephen F. Austin in their last time out. A&M-Corpus Christi has enjoyed a run of success against UIW over the past few years, taking home three wins in the last four meetings and emerging victorious by a final score of 1-0 in the most recent match between the two back on October 20 of last year. The Islanders got an early goal from current senior Morgan Westbury on a penalty kick on that day, which helped them jump out to a lead that they would hold on to for the remainder of the afternoon.

"UIW will be a tough opponent," Clitnovici said. "They are well coached and will be organized very well. We will need to be at our best to get past them, but we will do our best."
