LAKE CHARLES, La. – In their first road trip in Louisiana this year, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball team returns unscathed as they completed the 2-0 weekend after topping McNeese 3-1 (25-21, 26-28, 25-12, 25-19) Saturday afternoon.
The Islanders (9-13, 5-5 SLC) got to a .500 in conference play after winning on the road at Nicholls and McNeese this week. Against the Cowgirls (6-16, 2-8 SLC), A&M-Corpus Christi kept an offensive momentum with a .337 hitting percentage as a team.
It is the first time this year the Islanders posted consecutive matches hitting above .300 after they soared past Nicholls two days prior with an explosive .463 efficient performance. Running that offense was sophomore
Virginia Van Der Werff who dished out 53 assists today for a 12.71 assist/set average on the week. She paired it with 10 digs for the double-double and was three kills shy of the triple-double.
She spread the offense with four Islanders notably feeling the heat, with freshman
Jaeda Rawls-Fletcher amassing 18 kills off a .400 efficiency to be the match leader. Fellow freshman
Tatum Mason got hot for 15 kills at a .500 hitting clip. Senior
Katelyn Krienke trailed at 14 kills while junior
Kenna Buchanan reached double figures with 11.
Buchanan was the other Islander with a double-double as she topped her offensive performance with a 20-dig outing. She only followed redshirt sophomore
Brooklyn Jaeger who led the match with 24 digs. It is the first time this year the Islanders had two players with 20+ digs in the same match.
While it concluded their time across state lines, the Islanders will continue a three-day road swing down to Edinburg to face UTRGV Thursday night before returning home with the Vaqueros Saturday for the back-to-back South Texas Showdown.
