LAKE CHARLES, La. – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi soccer team plays its final road match of the 2025 regular season this week, completing its slate away from home with a trip to Louisiana to take on McNeese on Thursday at 7 p.m.
The Islanders (4-8-4, 2-4-2 SLC) are coming off one of their most complete performances of the year in their most recent contest on Sunday, taking down UTRGV by a final of 3-2 in Edinburg in the very first leg of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union. The team jumped out to its biggest halftime lead of the season in that match, using goals from freshman
Emma Lucero, redshirt senior
Madison Page and senior
Mai-Lisa Atis to head into the break ahead 3-0, an advantage that ended up holding the rest of the way.
"We've had a good week of preparation," Islanders head coach
Daniel Clitnovici said. "We have focused primarily on our recovery, as it's been a grueling season so far and the additional recovery sessions are much needed. The game vs. McNeese on Thursday night is another opportunity for our team to get better and improve on our last game. We feel we performed very well on Sunday at UTRGV, and we want to make sure we can keep that positive momentum going into the next game."
This match proved to be a very important one in the standings, as it brought the Islanders up to eight total conference points and into a tie with both HCU and UIW for the final two spots in the Southland Conference Soccer Championship, which kicks off on November 4 in Beaumont. With a win on Thursday, A&M-Corpus Christi would overtake the Cowgirls (4-9-3, 3-3-1 SLC), who currently sit in a tie for fifth place with 10 conference points after falling to Northwestern State in their last time out last Thursday. The Islanders will be looking to repeat their performance against McNeese from 2024, a match in which they cruised to a 3-1 win at the Dr. Jack Dugan Family Soccer and Track Stadium on the strength of goals by Atis and current sophomore
Maddy Howells.
"I have been impressed with our group's mentality the last few weeks," Clitnovici said. "They have shown up to practice and team events with a real focus, and that's all I can ask for."
