Khatevi Wins Again at Arturo Barrios Invitational as Men Finish 8th, Women Place 11th

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi cross country team closed out the 2025 regular season on Friday morning at the Arturo Barrios Invitational, hosted by Texas A&M, highlighting a solid day of performances with yet another individual victory from sophomore Elizabeth Khatevi.

Khatevi emerged victorious in a field of 336 competitors in the women's 6k, finishing with a time of 18:56.0 that broke her own school record in the event that she set at the same meet nearly a year ago to the date. After settling in near the top of the pack for the majority of the race, she made her move in the home stretch, turning on the jets to surpass both Angela Perez of Wake Forest and Jadyn Keeler of North Dakota and finish more than nine seconds clear of the former and 12 of the latter.

The win continued Khatevi's stretch of dominance throughout the 2025 season, as it marked her fourth consecutive individual victory of the year after she did so at Cross Country at the Seashore on August 29, the Gerald Richey UTA Invitational on September 5 and the Gans Creek Classic on September 26. When including her debut campaign in 2024, the Nairobi, Kenya native has taken home first place in six of the seven cross country meets that she has competed at.

"I'm super pleased with the individual success we had today," Islanders head coach Bryan Jackson said. "Elizabeth's performance was unbelievable, and she continues to show how talented she is. That was her most impressive win of the season by far."

Khatevi's triumph helped the Islander women finish in 11th place out of 38 teams, ahead of power conference opponents Texas Tech, Houston, Baylor and TCU and Southland Conference rivals UTRGV, UIW, McNeese, New Orleans, Lamar and Nicholls. Right behind Khatevi came sophomore Alicia Finnis, who placed 28th overall with a time of 20:31.4. Freshman Phylis Kibet and junior Faith Ramos also finished in the top 100 in 63rd and 84th respectively with times of 21:11.5 and 21:32.1, and sophomore Embla Hreimsdottir rounded out the team's top five after crossing the line in 22:10.5.

On the other side, the men had an even higher placement as a team, coming in eighth out of 32 schools and also finishing ahead of four different conference foes. For the third meet in a row, the team was paced by freshman Kye Lowth, who stayed hot by finishing in 12th overall out of 342 competitors with a time of 23:25.1 that now ranks second in program history behind only teammate Dominic Kiptum. Sophomore Diego Canto was A&M-Corpus Christi's second-highest finisher in 38th place with a time of 23:58.9, and right behind him was senior Ewan Wheelwright, who came in 50th place with a time of 24:08.4 in what was his best outing of the year to date. Kiptum would then cross the line in 24:16.7 to finish in 63rd place, and sophomore Andrew Rivas cracked the team's top five for the first time in 2025 after clocking in at 25:15.8.

"The men's team had an overall good day," Jackson said. "Kye, Diego and Ewan raced very well."

The Islanders will now start their preparations for the most important meet of the season in two weeks' time, next heading to the Southland Conference Championships in Natchitoches, Louisiana on October 31.
