COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi cross country team competes in its final meet before the Southland Conference Championships this week, heading north to College Station to take part in the Arturo Barrios Invitational, hosted by Texas A&M. The men will kick things off on the day at 8:30 a.m. CT in the 8k, and the women will follow in the 6k at 9:15.
The Islanders last competed at the Gans Creek Classic in Missouri on September 26, putting together strong efforts on both sides amidst their toughest competition of the year to date. The women had the best finish of that day, finishing second out of 27 teams in the 6k Black race behind an individual victory from sophomore
Elizabeth Khatevi, her third in as many meets this season and fifth of her young career. Behind her, freshman
Phylis Kibet and sophomore
Alicia Finnis also finished on the podium, coming in eighth and 15
th place respectively out of 236 competitors.
The men also performed admirably on the same day, finishing sixth out of 26 teams in the 8k Black race and outplacing power conference schools such as Vanderbilt, Nebraska and Baylor. Individually, freshman
Kye Lowth continued to shine in his first cross country season with the team, getting onto the podium himself with a 12th-place finish out over 250 athletes. This was the Australian's second straight meet coming in as the Islanders' top individual finisher, first doing so at the beginning of September when he finished first overall at the Gerald Richey UTA Invitational.
"We're looking to grow from our last experience," Islanders head coach
Bryan Jackson said. "Everything in our sport is a trial run for the championships, so we're looking to do some things better, be a little fitter and just get our last measuring stick of where we're at before we go take our shot at winning some conference championships."
The live results for the Arturo Barrios Invitational will be available to follow along as they happen.
