CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi soccer team looks to turn things around in its next match this week, coming back to campus to host Lamar at the Dr. Jack Dugan Family Soccer and Track Stadium on Thursday at 7 p.m.
In their most recent contest, the Islanders (2-6-3, 0-2-1 SLC) fell on the road to Southeastern on Sunday despite a valiant effort at a comeback, nearly putting home the equalizing goal despite playing with 10 players for the final 20 minutes of the game after freshman
Sille Bach Vesterholm was handed her second yellow card of the afternoon. In just the home stretch alone, they had a pair of shots by redshirt senior
Madison Page and junior
Ashley Wilson hit the woodwork, a try by senior
Mai-Lisa Atis saved and a couple of attempts from juniors
Emmie Barton and
Dakota Merino just narrowly miss the goal mouth, but they could not find the one score that they needed to walk away with a point.
"I think we are definitely trending in a good direction, even though the results may not show that," Islanders assistant coach
Kyle Clark said. "We're starting to generate some more chances going forward and finding some more team chemistry within the group. The effort is always there. They're a great group as far as their heart and their desire, and they work super hard. We just need a few things to fall our way a little bit, but even though we didn't get much results-wise last week, we do believe we're heading in a very good direction."
The Islanders now take on a Cardinals (4-4-3, 1-0-2 SLC) team looking to enact some revenge, as in the last meeting between the two, the former took home a 2-1 victory in Corpus Christi during the first round of the 2024 Southland Conference Championship. Atis came through with a huge goal in that match, putting home the equalizer in the 63
rd minute after the team fell behind early on in the first half. As for this season, Lamar comes into play having earned points in each of its first three conference matches, drawing with East Texas A&M and UIW before taking home a 2-1 victory over HCU in their most recent contest last Thursday.
"It's about making sure that we start out on the front foot," Clark said about what he wants to see from the team on Thursday. "We want to do that whether we're at home or on the road, but especially at home we're going to try to attack and try to get a result out of it. We also need to remember that soccer is a game where not everything is going to go your way and everything won't be perfect, so it's about how we can take problems head on on the field, solve them as a unit during the game and overcome some obstacles to continue to go forward."
Thursday's match can be watched live on ESPN+ with
Steven King on the call. The live stats can also be followed along as they happen.
