CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – In another clean sweep, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball team completed an unbeaten weekend in its home tournament after downing Texas Southern 3-0 Saturday in the final match of the Islanders Classic, presented by Schlotzsky's.
The Islanders (3-3) have now won three straight to even their season after also defeating North Florida and Jacksonville State this weekend. It comes after sweeping the Tigers (0-6) 25-19, 25-17, 25-17 in the tournament finale.
It was another efficient match for the Islanders, who nearly matched their season-high hitting percentage with a .326, just short of their .328 mark achieved the night before against the Gamecocks. Junior
Tori Arrington converted on nine of her 14 attempts and went with errorless to turn in a personal hitting clip of .643, her career high.
Junior
Rylee Achtzehn hit above .400 off seven kills, while senior
Kyndal Payne led the match with 11 kills. She recorded a minimum of 10 kills in all three matches on the weekend.
Graduate
Alex Hoglund ran the offense with 36 assists. She added three kills herself without error in addition to tallying two service aces, three digs, and three blocks to her stat line.
Payne was three digs away from her third consecutive double-double, seconding the team with seven with senior
Kayla White notching her fifth double figure dig performance of the season with 16 today.
It was the 24
th meeting between the two programs, with the Islanders remaining spotless in the all-time record to move to 24-0 against the Tigers. A&M-Corpus Christi hasn't even dropped a set to Texas Southern since 2004.
At the conclusion of the tournament, Hoglund and Arrington were both named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Islanders will now hit the road for nearly the next month before returning home on Oct. 5. They next head to Edinburg for tournament-play against Texas Tech and San Francisco on Sept. 13 and 14.
