Islanders dropped in opening round at Southland Championship

Hammond, La. - The Texas A&M- Corpus Christi baseball team faced off with the two seeded Nicholls Colonels in the first round of the Southland Baseball Championship on Wednesday.

Zach Garica started on the mound for the Islanders and fought through a bases-loaded first inning, only to give up two runs. The Colonels tacked on two more runs in the second inning to make it 4-0.

A&M- Corpus Christi did continue to fight back in the game thanks to patience at the plate as the team combined for four walks.

The Islanders first of three extra base hits came in the third inning by Cole Modgling who hit his sixth double of the season.

In the fifth, Mason Persons hit his first homerun of the season to get A&M-Corpus Christi on the board.

Logan Vaughan added his sixth home run of the season in the seventh inning.

The strong individual hitting did not add up to overall team success as the Colonels put together 14 runs on 15 hits to move on to round two of the Southland Championship winning 14-2 in seven innings.

The Islanders will now shift their focus to Thursday where they will play in the elimination bracket at 12 P.M. against the New Orleans Privateers who fell to Southeastern Louisiana 10-2.

Earlier in the season the Islanders took two of three to clinch the series over the Privateers, with scores of 2-0, 11-6, and 3-5. Game two of that series resulted in an 11-run outburst led by catcher Chance Reisdorph who had himself a career day hitting two home runs and driving in six RBI's. The pitching staff also joined in on the series win by shutting out New Orleans in game one, led by Mattew Watson pitching six innings and striking out six batters. Riely Hunsaker earned the three innings save, securing the shutout.
