NATCHITOCHES, La. – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team secured its second conference series of the season, taking a 7-2 decision Sunday in the rubber match with Northwestern State at Brown-Stroud Field.
The Islanders (16-20, 4-5 SLC) looked to their bullpen once again in the deciding third game, with junior
Zach Garcia posting the quality start for the victory as the Demons (11-22, 4-5 SLC) were held to nothing in the final three innings.
The Islanders have won every rubber match they've played this year, securing series wins over Abilene Christian, UTSA, UIW, and now Northwestern State.
A&M-Corpus Christi struck early and often to stay ahead of the Demons, never conceding their lead after junior
Logan Vaughan did quick work to put the Islanders ahead in the first. It only built from there, as Vaughan ended the night with a 3-for-5 performance in addition to driving in four of A&M-Corpus Christi's runs.
Junior
Isaac Webb also had his fifth 3+ hit performance of the season, scoring twice himself while driving in a run as well. Senior
Sebastian Trinidad also finished with the multi-hit day after getting past the Northwestern State bullpen for two hits.
Junior
Garrett Gruell got the first run of the day after heading home from first on Vaughan's deep double to the right center gap. After a comfortable early score, the Islander tacked on two on another Vaughan drive as his single to left in the third sent Trinidad and junior
Mason Persons home for the 3-0 lead.
A big inning came in the fifth, with junior
Isaac Webb knocking the base hit to get things going. Trinidad drew the walk before an error got Gruell to second on his at-bat while Webb ran home on the play. With Gruell in scoring position, he ran home on yet another RBI from Vaughan as his single through the right made it a 5-0 game. The Islanders tacked on another after junior
Chance Reisdorph sent an extra-base hit down the left field line to send Vaughan home for the 6-0 lead.
The Demons would answer with a run in both the sixth and the seventh, but the ninth-inning insurance from Webb in his second homer of the season helped secure the 7-2 game three final.
Garcia earned his third win of the season after conceding just the pair of runs through six innings. The bullpen of
Jack Hill,
Samuel Feltz, and
Maddox Thornton, who earned the save in game two, held up Garcia's quality start to finish with the remaining three innings of shutout ball.
The Islanders will now head to Rice for a Wednesday night matchup before continuing conference play next weekend at home against HCU.
