Volleyball Signs Hoglund & Van Der Werff to 2024 Roster

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Bringing in a pair of setters to join the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball team, head coach Steve Greene announced the signing of Alex Hoglund and Virginia Van Der Werff Friday.

Hoglund is a graduate transfer from the University of San Diego while Van Der Werff comes to the Island straight out of high school. Both join in a setting role, as the positional group has had proven success at A&M-Corpus Christi with the Islanders securing the last five straight SLC Setter of the Year awards.

Hoglund, from Berkeley, California, spent four seasons at San Diego where she helped the team to an NCAA Tournament Final Four appearance in 2022. She recorded right under 200 assists during her time with the Toreros including 131 her senior year. In high school, she was a three-time All-League honoree and made a runner-up finish at State in 2018. Hoglund will finish out her eligibility at A&M-Corpus Christi while she works on her MBA in healthcare administration.

"Alex carries herself with confidence but is humble as she has competed at the highest levels. She is hardworking, athletic, able to run a high-end offense, and has the humility to lead her teammates. She can create highlights with heroic plays and huge efforts when the team needs a spark. Her helpful nature is ideal in the setting role," said Greene.

Van Der Werff, from Lansing, Kansas, joins the Islanders after leading her high school team to three consecutive championship seasons. Her varsity team won their league in 2020, 2021, and 2023 including winning State in the 2021 season. They were State runners-up in 2020 and finished eighth in 2022 and 2023. She finished her high school career with over 250 kills and 100 digs. While on the Island, Van Der Werff will work towards earning a degree in sociology.

"Virginia is very well versed in all aspects of the game. Her versatility makes her a viable attack option in addition to how well she varies up her offense. She has guided her team to venerably versus strong opponents. Her all-around abilities have put her and her teams in position to valiantly earn victory after victory."
