CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Sebastian Trinidad and
Mason Persons combined to go 6-for-7 with five runs scored and two RBIs, and five pitchers combined to allow just three runs (two earned) on just four hits Tuesday night as the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team handled Prairie View A&M 10-3 in a nonconference midweek matchup.
Trinidad reached base in each of his five plate appearances, going 3-for-3 with a pair of walks. He also scored the Islanders' first run on delayed steal of home in the first inning, and he drove in the second run with a single to right-center in the second.
Persons, hitting out of the 8-hole, was 3-for-4 with two runs scored. He singled in the Islanders' third run of the game with a single in the fourth, and he had the TAMU-CC's only extra-base of the game when he doubled in the second inning.
Junior Stevie Hom continued his recent hot streak, as the first baseman went 2-for-4 with a sacrifice fly and three RBIs. Since March 20, Hom has raised his average from .209 to .275, he's smacked four of his seven extra-base hits, and he's collected 14 of his 15 RBIs.
Shortstop
Bryce Logan also had a two-hit night as the Islanders (14-19) touched five Prairie View A&M (13-19) pitchers for 10 runs on 13 hits and six walks. Seven of the nine starters had a hit, six scored a run and five drove in a run.
The beneficiaries of all the offense were five TAMU-CC pitchers. During a designated bullpen game,
Jack Hill got the start and went three solid innings, giving up one unearned run on just two hits and 39 crisp pitches.
Cam Soliz, who ended up with his first career win, allowed only a walk over the next two innings. He gave way to
Samuel Feltz, who gave up a run on a hit and a walk, but he still struck out two in his inning of work.
Kendall Dove handled the seventh and eighth innings, giving up only a hit with no damage done. Then
Joshua Flaugher closed it out, striking out the first two batters before a pair of walks and a wild pitch allowed the Panthers to score their final run of the game.
In addition to the big nights at the plate and on the mound, the Islanders' defense was spectacular as well. The Islanders turned their 27
th double play of the season – which is tied for 13
th most in the nation – and in the eighth inning, Trinidad and Dove, among others, put on a clinic.
On consecutive plays, Trinidad – from his usual third-base spot – dove to his left to smother a pair of screaming ground balls, rise and fire to comfortably get both baserunners. Then Dove, perhaps more out of self-preservation, snagged a laser up near his head, then calmly jogged over for the casual flip to first to end the inning.
