CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – In the final regular season match of the year, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis team couldn't edge out a tough Lamar team and fell just short 4-3 Thursday at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
The Islanders (15-7, 2-2 SLC) opened with the doubles point and battled down to the last court and unfortunately couldn't get past Lamar's (8-11, 1-2 SLC) singles in the narrow 4-3 decision. It was their first-ever loss to the Cardinals at home who had won all the previous 12 meetings in Corpus Christi.
While it didn't end the way they wanted, the Islanders still had reason to celebrate as they honored senior
Avery Zavala in a special Senior Day presentation. Zavala finished 2-0 on the day after maintaining his unblemished doubles record in conference play after he and sophomore
Etienne Marty won 6-4 at No. 1 doubles. He then battled out a 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 victory at No. 1 singles.
Sophomore
Lucas Schurdevin and freshman
Nicolas Trebuchet notched a 6-4 doubles win as well at court three to clinch the doubles point.
Lamar was able to race ahead in the match with a 3-1 lead before Schurdevin secured his second win of the day in a 7-6, 6-4 fight at No. 3 singles. Zavala was able to tie things back up with his gritty three-set win and the final court stretched into a third-set tiebreak with Lamar ending on top.
The Islanders will now look ahead to the SLC Championships where they will fight to defend their tournament title. Awaiting final seeding, the tournament is set for April 18-21 in San Antonio, hosted by UIW.
