Men's Tennis Exits SLC Tournament after Falling to No. 4 Lamar

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis team saw its season come to a close in the 2024 SLC Tournament, dropping a tough 4-0 contest to No. 4 Lamar Thursday at the McFarlin Tennis Center.

Things just didn't go the way of the Islanders (15-8) in the first round of the conference tournament, who were unable to finalize a point before Lamar clinched the match. It is the first time since 2012 that the men weren't in the finals or the champions of the conference tournament.

Lamar secured the doubles point on courts two and three before senior Avery Zavala and sophomore Etienne Marty could take their 5-2 dual at No. 1 doubles. They never dropped a doubles match to a conference opponent this year, recently being named to the All-Conference First Team for No. 1 doubles.

Sophomore Lucas Schurdevin, who was honored on the All-Conference Second Team at No. 3 singles, won his opening set in a battled 7-5 score and was nearly able to secure the first point for the Islanders before the Cardinals clinched. Freshman Nicolas Niox Chateau came in at No. 5 singles for just the third time this year and showed a lot of grit as he took a 7-6 (1) first set.

The Islanders end the year with the 15-8 overall record. It is the 12th season in a row that the Islanders won at least 15 matches, excluding a shortened 2020 season.

The men move to 25-6 in SLC conference matches under head coach Steve Moore. It is the first time in the all-time series with Lamar that the Cardinals won back-to-back meetings, though, the Islanders still hold a 21-5 advantage in the head-to-head.
