CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – In its first of two home matches this weekend, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis squad got off to a winning start after notching a 6-1 decision over Morgan State Friday morning at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
The Islanders (9-3) battled out a pair of doubles wins for the early 1-0 lead in the match before playing out every dual to finish on top of Morgan State (2-5). It marks the first of two final home matches of the nonconference schedule, as the Islanders will play Sunday before not returning home until their conference opener on March 23 against New Orleans.
Freshman
Nicolas Trebuchet and sophomore
Lucas Schurdevin paired at No. 3 doubles and opened the morning with a 6-3 win there. Morgan State managed to even the playing field at court two, but it was senior
Avery Zavala and sophomore
Etienne Marty who emerged victorious to secure the doubles point after a 6-4 grind at court one.
Trebuchet notched his second victory of the day after cruising to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles. It came right after senior
Antoine Vicaire played an untouched 6-0, 6-0 triumph at court five. Following suit was Schurdevin who clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-2 outcome at the three-spot.
Not stopping there, freshman
Iannis Fernandes added on to A&M-Corpus Christi's day with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at N0. 4 singles before Marty closed it out with a gritty 7-5, 7-6 (3) decision.
Vicaire moves to a dominate 9-0 record on the year in singles play with Trebuchet also recording his ninth win of the season today.
"I'm super proud of how much these Islanders are improving! Their rate of improvement has been so impressive over the semester! Their commitment to working hard on the right things, not wasting any day, and controlling the things they can control! They're working hard on the right things and their character and team unity are the best you will ever find! I am excited to watch them continue to improve at this rapid rate and am excited for this season as we near conference!" said head coach
Steve Moore.
It was the first-ever meeting between the two programs, as the Islanders take the 1-0 lead in the all-time series. The women will play Morgan State tomorrow at 9 a.m. while the men will close out the home weekend Sunday at 11 a.m. against Kennesaw State.
