CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – In a tough Sunday draw, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis team fell to a challenging Kennesaw State team 4-0 at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
It was a deceiving final score, as the Islanders (9-4) were competing tough at singles two, four, and six before Kennesaw State (7-3) managed to clinch the others. In doubles,
Antoine Vicaire/
Matthieu Coignet were up 5-4 at No. 2 before the Owls took courts one and three.
"You're either winning or you're learning, and today we did some learning. Kennesaw State has a very talented, well-coached team, and they were honestly a little better today. But our guys are tough, highly motivated, and have great character! It was good for us that we got a bit of a kick to wake up and be savagely committed to our process! There is a difference in being lukewarmly committed to your process, fairly committed to your process, committed to your process, and savagely committed to your process! I think after this match, we learned that we must be savagely committed to our process and execute it with great physicality! So, we will learn and grow from this, and this high-character team will move onward and upward," said head coach
Steve Moore.
Freshman
Iannis Fernandes went up early after winning his first set 6-4 against his opponent at No. 4 singles and was up 5-4 in the second set to inch towards triumph.
Sophomore
Etienne Marty was battling at No. 2 singles and after going down a set, he answered back with authority in set two 6-1 to even the dual. The match was whistled over about the time they began the deciding third set.
It was the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
It marked the final home nonconference match of the season for the Islanders. They won't return until their conference opener on March 23 against New Orleans in a rematch of the 2023 SLC Tournament Final where the Islanders won 4-3 in a thrilling tiebreaker on the final court.
Until then, A&M-Corpus Christi will play five neutral matches beginning with a matchup with Cleveland State on Tuesday at 3 p.m. in Austin, Texas.
