DALLAS, Texas – Going to bat with the No. 39 team, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis team just fell 4-1 to SMU Wednesday at Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex.
It was a day that saw a lot of opportunity for the Islanders (10-2) in the contested match, but SMU (6-6) held strong to clinch it. It marks just the second loss on the season for A&M-Corpus Christi after already garnering 10 victories on the year.
Senior
Kateryna Rublevska earned her seventh straight singles win with a pair of 6-4 sets at No. 5 to account for A&M-Corpus Christi's point. Fellow senior
Naomi Moi McKenzie had gritted out a tough 7-6 first set at court two to be up in her dual against the No. 118 player in the ITA before being whistled down.
After dropping their first sets, seniors
Valeria Cherfus and
Victoire Delattre both battled back to even their duals with second-set victories. Cherfus won 6-3 to force the third at No. 4 while Delattre came back with a 6-4 set two at court six.
"This was a great battle and a great college tennis match! I thought our girls fought incredibly hard and showed big heart! This is a very talented and well-coached SMU team with several top-20 wins already and our girls had a legitimate chance to win the match. Everyone fought, and everyone cheered with all of their heart! It's one of those matches that will really elevate our team and one of those matches where you're proud of them even in a loss," said head coach
Steve Moore.
The Islanders will continue their journey through the 2024 season, returning home for a Saturday match against Morgan State at 9 a.m. at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. It will be the final home nonconference match for the women who will then pick back up the SLC slate in Corpus Christi on March 23 against New Orleans.
