HOUSTON, Texas – Escaping the rain to get in a doubleheader with Alcorn State, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men and women's tennis teams both came away with a victory Saturday at the Houston Jewish Community Center.
The women are now 13-2 on the year as the men move to 11-5. It was each of their second neutral match win on the week after the women topped Abilene Christian 4-2 while the men beat Alcorn State yesterday 6-0.
The women looked to their younger side to gain experience alongside their veterans as freshman
Ana Veroux and sophomore
Palina Saulevich paired at No. 1 doubles for the first time this year for a 6-2 win. Seniors
Valeria Cherfus and
Kateryna Rublevska backed their teammates with a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles for the 1-0 lead in the match.
Veroux then took on playing at No. 1 singles and performed exceptionally with a 6-1, 6-0 decision in that top spot. Saulevich also got her second win of the day with a clean 6-0, 6-0 scoresheet at court four. A new face made an appearance in the lineup as well, as freshman
Zoe Moley competed in her first singles dual of the year and opened her collegiate career with a 6-4, 6-0 win at court five.
Cherfus and Rublevska also took their singles duals for the 2-0 day.
The men stayed consistent and had a more typical lineup, as senior
Avery Zavala and
Etienne Marty paired at No. 1 doubles for a 6-2 win while senior
Antoine Vicaire/freshman
Matthieu Coignet won 6-4 at court two.
In singles, Zavala went through his process for a 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 1. Marty then took a 6-2, 6-3 win at court two while Vicaire had to battle out a three-set grind at court three. After going down in a tight 6-7 (5-7) set one, Vicaire fought back for a 7-5 set two to force a 10-point tiebreaker which he won 10-6 to secure the dual.
The Islanders improve to 2-0 all-time over the Alcorn State women while the men are now 3-0 over the Braves. A&M-Corpus Christi will look to close out the nonconference schedule next week with another pair of neutral matches each, as both the men and women will take on Texas Wesleyan in Waco, Texas on Tuesday at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
