WACO, Texas – In their final nonconference matches of the season, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men and women's tennis teams cruised to a combined three sweeps over Texas Wesleyan Tuesday at the Waco Regional Tennis Center to gain speed heading into the start of SLC play this weekend.
The men (13-5) took down the Rams twice, topping them 7-0 in a played-out opener before completing the doubleheader sweep with a 4-0 clinch in match two. The women (14-2) faced Texas Wesleyan just once and did so in processed fashion for a 4-0 victory.
Sophomore
Lucas Schurdevin and freshman
Nicolas Trebuchet both turned in 4-0 days, as the two paired at No. 3 doubles for 6-1 and 6-3 decisions in the matches. Schurdevin then took care of business at No. 3 singles to win 6-3, 6-4 in match one before rounding out the undefeated day with a 6-2, 6-1 victory in the second match.
Trebuchet played at No. 5 singles on the day for his two individual wins. Senior
Antoine Vicaire from court four also helped in the four-point second match with a 6-1, 6-3 victory. It was his second singles win of the day after taking down his first opponent with a pair of 6-2 sets but third overall after pairing with freshman
Matthieu Coignet at No. 2 doubles for a 6-2 triumph in the latter match.
Senior
Avery Zavala and sophomore
Etienne Marty paired at No. 1 doubles for 6-4 and 6-1 wins on the day before each notching a three-set win at courts one and two, respectively, in the opening match.
The women bypassed doubles and went straight to singles, with court five already won by default. Senior
Emma Aucagne refined her play with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles while fellow senior Kateryna Rublevksa similarly produced a 6-2, 6-2 victory at court three. Freshman
Ana Veroux closed out the Islanders with a rewarding 7-5, 6-3 triumph at No. 2 singles.
Both teams end the nonconference schedule with four neutral wins after facing the Rams in Waco, Texas. They'll look to bring that momentum back home when the teams get the fortune of opening conference play on their home court this Saturday against New Orleans.
The women are already off to a 1-0 start to SLC play after facing Southeastern on the road earlier this year, but the men will look match that when they take on the Privateers in a rematch of the 2023 tournament final where the Islanders came out on top of a 4-3 battle to advance to the NCAA Tournament.
