DALLAS, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team still couldn't get into a flow as it dropped the second game of the series with #19 Dallas Baptist 11-1 in an eight-inning run-rule decision Saturday night at Horner Ballpark.
The Islanders (10-12) couldn't quite get past the nationally ranked Patriots (15-3) who was able to find an offensive rhythm including a blowout fifth inning to run away with game two. After only tacking on one run in the top of the fourth, DBU added two in the bottom of the eighth to enforce the mercy rule.
Six Islanders managed to barrel a hit with junior
Josh Blount registering the team's only RBI of the night for the second game in a row. Junior
Garrett Gruell was the one who ran in for A&M-Corpus Christi's only run.
After rain delayed the original game time of 2 p.m. all the way back to 7 p.m., junior
Isaac Webb got the game finally going with a lead-off base hit. Gruell notched a hit in the first as well, but DBU was able to escape the early two-base running threat. The Islanders wouldn't reach base again until the fourth, when Gruell got on first after a fielding error from the Patriots' shortstop.
It proved costly, as senior
Sebastian Trinidad and junior
Chance Reisdorph followed his at-bat each with a single through the infield to load the bases. Only one managed to cross back home, however, as Gruell ran through off Blount's RBI-groundout.
In the bottom frame, DBU tried extending its lead after getting two on base with just one down, but sophomore
Christian Smith-Johnson showed off his speed and ran down a deep foul ball to get the second out as the Patriots only managed to plate one in the inning.
Though, the fifth inning came and the Patriots jumped on nearly every pitch to go up 9-1. The Islanders tried pulling together a response in the seventh after Blount, Smith-Johnson, and junior
Stephen Hom loaded the bases with just one down but DBU managed to turn the double play to stifle any momentum.
Another two runs from the hosts were tacked on in the bottom of the eighth to push them to the 10-run threshold to win early.
The Islanders will now look to salvage the series tomorrow in a 1 p.m. game three. The game will be available to watch live on ESPN+.
