Islanders Nearly Salvages Series at #19 DBU

DALLAS, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team played ahead of nationally ranked Dallas Baptist for the majority of the game until a blooper of a ninth-inning allowed the hosts to walk it off in the bottom frame to complete the series sweep Sunday.

The Islanders (10-13) were the ones to attack first but DBU (16-3) continued to counter every time and ended with the last say as the Patriots walked off the 5-4 decision.

It didn't come easy, as the Islanders faced a funky top of the ninth as a run was originally scored on a safety squeeze bunt before it got waved back due to runner's interference. Then, a hit by pitch with bases loaded was nearly called a run until replay showed the batter swinging just enough for the called out as DBU escaped two potential go-ahead runs.

Junior Zach Garcia started on the mound for his third straight quality start after going 6.2 innings and gave up just three runs off five hits through his outing. He left with the Islanders still up 4-2 in the seventh.

Despite the loss, the Islanders were more evened today with the nationally ranked Patriots, matching them with eight hits. Juniors Garrett Gruell and Logan Vaughan both went 2-for-4 at the plate which each scoring a run. Junior Isaac Webb drove in two runs for the multi-RBI day after his sole hit came in top of the seventh.

Nobody got going until the fourth when Gruell knocked one to right for the double. Trading spots with him was junior Josh Blount who followed with the extra-base hit for the first run of the day as Gruell headed home.

Garcia kept the Patriots silenced through five to set up more offense from the Islanders in the sixth as junior Drake Kerr notched the two-out single. Getting a good jump, he rounded all the way home from first as Gruell barreled his second double of the game for the RBI as the Islanders went up 2-0.

DBU finally showed life in the bottom frame to tie the game up with a pair of runs. Though, the Islanders regained the lead in the seventh when Vaughan led off with the infield single who advanced on the sacrifice bunt from senior Cole Modgling. Junior Chance Reisdorph entered as a pinch runner and drew the walk as he and Vaughan ended on second and third before Webb drove them both home with the deep enough single to right.

Up 4-2, the Islanders relented the lead with a run in both the bottom of the seventh and eighth as DBU tied it. Following the lost opportunity in the top of the ninth, the Patriots managed to get past the Islanders with the two-out walk off.

The Islanders will now look to recoup before hosting Northwestern at home this week, playing them at 6 p.m. on both Tuesday and Wednesday for the two-game matchup at Chapman Field.
