AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis team opened the week with a tough battle against Cleveland State, falling just 5-2 in the neutral contest at the Austin Tennis Center Tuesday.
It is the first of five neutral matches for the Islanders who is closing out the nonconference schedule on the road at impartial courts. It was the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
The Islanders (9-5) couldn't settle into a rhythm against Cleveland State (9-6), but were paced by dual performances from sophomore
Lucas Schurdevin and freshman
Iannis Fernandes.
Schurdevin quickly remedied the playing field after securing a 6-1, 6-4 result at No. 3 singles which evened the match at 1-1. Though, the Vikings would clinch the next four singles courts for the match win.
However, Fernandes remained sturdy and came back in the second set with a 6-3 score before outlasting his opponent 7-5 in the third to secure the final point of the match.
The Islanders will continue with a slate of neutral matches this week, heading to Beaumont for matches against Alcorn State on Friday and Saturday.
