COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis team took on No. 12 Texas A&M and senior
Antoine Vicaire earned himself a straight-set victory against the Aggies as the Islanders showed a lot of depth against the nationally ranked Aggies Sunday night.
The Islanders (8-3) didn't go down without a lot of fight, especially Vicaire who gritted out a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles over an opponent who had never lost on their home court at Texas A&M (9-2).
It marks A&M-Corpus Christi's first point ever won against the Aggies in the all-time series. Vicaire himself now improves to an impressive 8-0 on the year.
"This is one of those classic matches where you're incredibly proud of the heart and fight of your team, even in a loss! Looking at these scores, we battled the No. 12 team in the nation to a very close match! Every guy played with courage and incredible fight. I am especially happy for Antoine! He really broke through today and played like an absolute gladiator. It's been a long time since I've been this proud of a team even after a loss, and I just thought their character, effort, and heart were incredible today! We lost to a great team today," said head coach
Steve Moore.
The other courts still battled tough as well, as No. 1 singles player
Avery Zavala was pitted against the #86 player in the nation and still managed to force an extra game before dropping set one just 7-5. Sophomore
Lucas Schurdevin and freshman
Iannis Fernandes also played with a lot of grit as both forced a tiebreaker in their first sets against the Aggies. Fernandes was then just bested again in the second set 6-4 at No. 4 singles.
The Islanders will look to keep their head high as they head into a 12-day gap between competition. They will then play back at home on March 8 and 11 in matches against Morgan State and Kennesaw State at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
