Baseball Drops Tough Matchup with Washington

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team couldn't contain the Washington bats to fall 11-4 Saturday night on day two of the Kleberg Bank College Classic.

The Islanders (3-5) were able to match Washington (1-3-1) with a run in the first, but the Huskies found offensive success in six innings to create separation. It wasn't without the effort from junior Garret Gruell and sophomore Christian Smith-Johnson, who both went yard for the team's second multi-homerun game of the year. Gruell has been a part of both.

A&M-Corpus Christi wasn't too off par with the Huskies, only being out-hit 10-7. The Islanders are up to 17 hits on the weekend, prior to which they led the NCAA in season-total hits with 64.

Washington got out in front of the Islanders bullpen, opening the game with a leadoff home run to left. Despite the blemish, A&M-Corpus Christi responded in the bottom frame as junior Isaac Webb drew the leadoff walk before Gruell singled through the left side for the RBI and tie ball-game.

Webb's single continued his individual streak of garnering a hit in every game of the year so far.

The Huskies tacked on another run in the second and pushed ahead with three more between the fourth and fifth innings. It wasn't until the bottom of the fifth that the Islanders would attempt a response as junior Stephen Hom led it off with the base-hit before Smith-Johnson barreled it deep over the left field fence. It got the Islanders back within a reasonable 5-3 deficit.

However, Washington would extend its lead ahead after a three-run inning in its next offensive opportunity and the Islanders couldn't manage anything until the eighth when Gruell swung on the first pitch to send it beyond the park for the solo home run.

It would be the final time an Islander rounded home on the night as Washington kept their bats warm to score three more in the ninth to secure the final advantage.

The Islanders will close out the Kleberg Bank College Classic tomorrow at 3 p.m. against Pittsburgh back at Whataburger Field.
