CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team couldn't convert on ample opportunity, falling in a tough 10-2 decision Sunday against Pittsburgh at Whataburger Field on the final day of the Kleberg Bank College Classic.
The Islanders (3-6) didn't find an issue reaching base, just being edged 12-11 in hits compared to Pittsburgh (5-1). Though, they couldn't get past the Panthers enough to convert on those chances, resulting in the eight-run difference.
Senior
Sebastian Trinidad and junior
Drake Kerr both turned in three-hit performances as the former accounted for the only RBI of the night for the Islanders off a double to left in the fourth. Trinidad was also the only Islander to record an extra-base hit and did so twice with a pair of doubles.
The Panthers struck early for a 2-0 lead after the first and built upon it off a couple of A&M-Corpus Christi errors in the second to go up 5-0. The Islanders got runners on in both the second and third outings, but it wouldn't be until the fourth that they could finally respond.
Junior
Chance Reisdorph knocked the infield single in the fourth and got a good jump from first as he rounded all the way to home plate off Trinidad's double to left. It finally got the Islanders on the board, but Trinidad was left stranded at second to cap the inning's scoring.
Kerr beat out the throw with the bunt single to lead off the fifth before junior
Logan Vaughan drew the walk to get two on with one out. An error by the Panthers proved beneficial for the Islanders, as Kerr headed home on the play to tack another run on for A&M-Corpus Christi before a double play ended the inning.
Junior
Isaac Webb just managed to continue hit hitting streak to all nine games this season with a bunt single in the bottom of the ninth. He snuck to second on the wild pitch and Gruell reached on the infield single for two runners on, but the Islanders once again couldn't convert as Pittsburgh ended on top.
Overall, the Islanders turned in 27 hits against the triage of Power Fives to tack on to their NCAA leading total of 64 entering the weekend.
While it completed the Kleberg Bank College Classic, the home stretch isn't over for the Islanders as they will rematch Pittsburgh back on campus at Chapman Field Monday for a 10:30 a.m. first pitch.
