COMMERCE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball team has continued in stride, taking down Texas A&M-Commerce in a sweep (25-23, 25-19, 25-18) Thursday night at The Field House for its sixth consecutive win.
The Islanders (10-8, 5-2 SLC) have topped Commerce (6-15, 3-5) twice now in the span of a week after the two faced off last Thursday in Corpus Christi. It helps A&M-Corpus Christi also extend a five-match winning streak in conference play.
Graduate
Alex Hoglund ran the offense to a .366 team hitting mark with 41 assists on the night. It was her third time this year to record 40+ assists in just a three-set match and second in a row. The Islanders improve to 4-0 this year when hitting above .300 and 10-1 when hitting above .200 as a team.
"This team is such a special group and it was obvious tonight with the positive attitude and determination to play well from start to finish," said head coach
Steve Greene. "We were able to really push through some difficult challenges from Commerce and I love seeing how much we are improving each match. Alex was especially outstanding tonight. She really showcased her creativity and understanding of the game to put our team in so many great situations."
Senior
Kyndal Payne led the team in both kills and digs for the 14-kill, 14-dig double-double. It was her 11
th double-double of the year and fifth in conference play. She also made just one error on the night a .444 hitting clip.
Senior
Leah Stolfus also hit in double figures and went errorless for 11 kills off a .458 hitting percentage. It marks her 11
th double digit kill performance of the year and her eighth time hitting above .400, all with at least eight kills.
Also out of the middle was junior
Kaitlyn Baumann who converted on nine of her 13 attempts for a .538 clip.
Matching Payne on the defensive end was redshirt freshman
Brooklyn Jaeger who picked up 14 digs, her career best, after suiting up as libero in the third set. Senior
Kendall Mahaney also dug up double figures with 11 digs.
A&M-Corpus Christi remains undefeated against the Lions, maintaining a perfect 6-0 all-time record after Commerce joined the conference in 2022. It was the fourth time the win came in a sweep.
The Islanders will finish out the road trip with a Saturday 1 p.m. matchup at Northwestern State.
