CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball team secured its third conference win in five days after sweeping McNeese 3-0 on Saturday in the Dugan Wellness Center.
It capped a perfect week for the Islanders (9-8, 4-1 SLC), who went on the road to also defeat UIW and HCU. They only dropped one set the whole week and improved to 4-1 in SLC play.
It was also the second time this week A&M-Corpus Christi topped a league opponent who was previously undefeated in SLC play.
The Islanders never relinquished their leads in the first two sets to win them 25-18 and 25-16 for a quick 2-0 advantage in the match. The Cowgirls (6-12, 4-1 SLC) kept it close in the third and even took their first lead of the match, but A&M-Corpus Christi relied on a .400 hitting and the ace by sophomore
Zoria Heard to garner the 26-24 edge to complete the sweep and undefeated week.
It marked A&M-Corpus Christi's second time this week hitting above .300 as a team, turning in a .346 while holding McNeese to just a .167 clip. Graduate
Belle Morgan ran the efficient offense to lead the match once again in assists at 35. She has led every conference match in assists this year.
Junior
Kyndal Payne led the way in kills for the third time this week, adding 16 for a .368 hitting mark. Junior
Leah Stolfus hit for an impressive .523, converting on 12 of her 23 attempts without an error. It was her fourth career time to hit over .500 on more than 10 kills and first this season.
Junior
Morgan Baese also hit in double figures for the second match in a row, recording 10. Prior to the week, she had recorded double-figure kills only one other time in her career.
The defense kept McNeese's offense to only a .167 efficiency with junior
Kayla White picking up 10 digs. It marked White's second double digit dig performance in a row and 10
th this year.
The Islanders entered the match leading the conference in opponent service aces (1.17/set) and will improve even further after remaining perfect on serve receive against McNeese. It was the first time this year that A&M-Corpus Christi didn't allow an opponent service ace in a match.
A&M-Corpus Christi will also improve in kills per set after totaling 48 and opponent kills per set after keeping McNeese to 39 in the match. The Islanders led the league in both categories prior to the match.
After an action-packed five days, the Islanders will get back on schedule with Thursday and Saturday matches next week. They will hit the road again to face Northwestern State and Texas A&M-Commerce.
